7 ministers shut eyes to property detail laws

IT was a comedy of errors, or so it seemed when it came to light that seven ministers supposed to be enforcers of the law have been giving two hoots to the laws of the land. The National Vigilance Centre (NVC), an anti-graft body functioning under the direct supervision of the prime minister, on Thursday accused Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Tourism Minister Post Bahadur Bogati, Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun, Peace and Reconstruction Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Information and Communications Minister Raj Kishor Yadav, Science and Technology Minister Keshav Man Shakya and Forest Minister Yadu Bansha Jha of failing to provide their property details, even 60 days after the beginning of the new fiscal year. The law has a mandatory provision requiring persons holding public posts to make public their property details within 60 days of the beginning of the new fiscal. However, these ministers and thousands of civil servants and security personnel, including eight jointsecretaries, have not furnished the details, the NCV said. The joint-secretaries include Navaraj Bhandari, Narayan Shrestha, Hari Prasad Poudel, Govinda Prasad Sharma, Chandra Prasad Dahal, Mohan Bahadur Karki, Tanuklal Yadav and Ganesh Rai. DIG Parvati Thapa, SSP Rana Bahadur Chand and SP Shyam Bahadur Khadka are also among those who failed to meet the deadline. They, however, submitted the details after the deadline. “We have created a list of those who failed to furnish property details and will send it to the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) requesting it to book the individuals and investigate their property,” NVC Spokesperson Krishna Paudyal told a press conference here. According to Clause 50 of the Corruption Prevention Act 2002, persons in public office who fail to submit their property statement within the 60 days are liable to be fined Rs 5,000. However, the CIAA, the body responsible for booking the defaulters, has failed to take action against such people in recent years. Shrestha Pun Bogati Yadav Rayamajhi
