Incongruities of the everyday
ASMALL coffee shop in an unnamed city, a beautiful proprietor, and an innocent busboy— Maila; the play Maila Dot Com, currently being staged at the Mandala Theatre in Anamnagar revolves around this setting and these two characters. The café proprietor is a strangely alluring lady who is very kind of Maila. She gives him food, is very caring, even affectionate towards him, and often brings him clothes to wear. Understandably, Maila’s feelings for her are as affectionate as (if not any more than) hers are for him. The two characters, who spend all their days together in the coffee shop, get closer to one another over a period. And as time passes by, Maila even begins developing a physical attraction towards his beautiful boss. A play that interprets the sexual psychology of a young, even innocent man who has no life other than the place where he works—the little coffee shop, Maila Dot Com follows two characters over a three-day period in the course of which we get a glimpse of the lives these lone souls are leading. While Maila is seen interacting with invisible customers, asking them what they would like to drink, the owner herself is shown to be busy attending to other clients. Meanwhile, the two principal—and only visible—characters never fail to have conversations of their own, and it is through these charming tête-à-têtes that Maila draws closer to his employer. The daily activities of these two characters are repetitive, almost monotonous, to be honest. But there is something very powerful in these seemingly mundane goings on. Even though nothing big ever happens on stage, he play itself has you hooked and keeps you entertained and firmly on your seats for the entire 50 minutes. Maila Dot Com stars Rajan Khatiwada and Srijana Subba, and has been written and directed by Dayahang Rai. With such popular and noted names on its roster, the play—which is being staged after Sunkeshari’s month-long run at Mandala—gives theatre regulars in the capital something to look forward to. Rai, who actually finished writing the play some five years ago, says that he hopes Maila Dot Com will help people make sense of the nonsense that is actually so common in all of our lives. He hopes that the audience will not have much difficultly in relating to the play, which has already been staged 16 times in different venues across the country. Khatiwada, a man who has brought this play’s central character to life numerous times makes the entire experience of watching it unfold a truly enjoyable one. The manner in which he gets into the character of Maila is so organically achieved that one cannot help but laugh when he speaks, or for that matter when he dœs anything else on stage. Subba, his companion on stage, compliments him exceedingly well. This is the second play to be staged at Mandala Theatre’s newly built auditorium in Anamnagar. The theatre group, which was established in 2009, has organised two international youth theatre festivals, and showcased six plays over this period. Maila Dot Com, will be staged every day, with the exception of Monday, at the Mandala Theatre premises at 4:30 pm till February 2
