Maoist boss ‘ready’ to become PM

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Monday said he is ready to become the prime minister if that helps end the current political stalemate. Addressing the inaugural session of the party’s district level convention in Gorkha, he said that even Nepali Congress (NC) leaders agree that he is the only person after the late NC leader Girija Prasad Koirala who is capable of breaking the deadlock. “I propose my name for the post of prime minister if the opposition parties do not support (prime minister)Baburam Bhattarai,” he said. The Maoist boss, however, said that an independent candidate or someone representing smaller parties in the current coalition is more likely to head a consensus government. “Chance of agreeing on a common candidate from the major political parties are slim.” Dahal further said that his party will leave the government if the opposition parties agree on a package deal and pledge to hold fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) elections. “Unlike the NC and the UML, the Maoist party is ever willing to be flexible and look for other alternatives,” he said. “We are ready to reach out to the people through elections, give them the decisive power, but the opposition is not keen on the idea.” PM Bhattarai, also the Vice-chairman of the UCPN (Maoist), said Dahal is the party’s first choice to lead a consensus government. He reiterated that holding CA elections is his government’s top priority and that his party is willing to exercise utmost flexibility to make sure that timely polls are held.
