ARAGING
fire that broke out at Belhara-9 in the district on Friday night burnt
seven houses to cinder, destroying property worth about Rs 12 million.
The fire broke out from a house belonging to Bal Bahadur Shrestha at
around 10:30pm and soon engulfed the abutting houses. There was no any
human casualty as the victims managed to flee. The houses belonging to
Bal Bahadur, Yagya Bahadur Thapa, Rekha Thapa, Khem Bahadur Thapa and
Tilak Khatri were completely destroyed in the incident, police said. The
victims could not salvage their belongings as the incident took place
at night. Yagya Bahadur, a local trader, said Rs 800,000 cash kept in
his cupboard was also destroyed in the fire. According to local people,
the fire went beyond control as it was fuelled by the explosion of eight
cooking gas cylinders. Police suspect petrol stored for selling and
alcohol also might have fuelled the inferno. It took hours for local
people, Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel to
douse the fire with the help of two fire engines brought from Dharan and
Damak. Meanwhile, the Natural Disaster Rescue Committee and the
District Development Committee, respectively, provided Rs 5,000 and Rs
2,000 to each family while the Nepal Red Cross Society in the district
provided relief materials to the victims. Similarly, Khagendra Jha, a
local trader, distributed 50 kg of rice and Rs 5,000 to each family.
