Lack of bridge poses risk to locals

LOCAL people have been forced to use a twine to cross the Karnali river, putting their lives at risk, as a suspension bridge over the river at Bhattadi in the district, which was destroyed by then CPN (Maoist) during the insurgency, is yet to be completed. Around 5,000 people have been affected as the bridge that connects Badalkot and Syuna VDCs is yet to be reconstructed. The Maoists had also destroyed two other bridges at Regilghat and Lalighat on November 28, 2000. These bridges, however, have already been reconstructed. According to Devraj Bogati, a local resident, more than 12 people have been killed as they fell into the river while crossing it. The reconstruction work was initiated by the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction. Chandra Bahadur Shahi, District Technical Office chief, said the work was delayed as the concerned office in Dhangadhi failed to provide cables for the bridge in time. He, however, said when they received the cables six months ago, they did not have an engineer to carry out the project. “We will resume the reconstruction work as soon as new engineer, Bindu Khumbu, arrives in the district,” he said. Budget worth Rs 2 million released for the bridge froze last year. The District Development Office (DDC) said a contract was awarded to Agra Bahadur Shahi of the Gobinda Construction Service to complete the work within two years. DDC officials, meanwhile, said three technicians have already been deployed at the project site to complete the remaining work within mid-April.
