Opposition unions protest govt interference

VARIOUS sister wings of opposition parties demonstrated on Sunday against the government’s “protection for crime against humanity”. The Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), Tarun Dal and the Nepal Mahila Sangh organised a symbolic ‘funeral rally’ demanding action against the accused in the 2004 murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa. Around 500 cadres of the Nepal Congress-affiliated sister unions joined the rally, carrying a symbolic ‘corpse’ of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. The joint rally started from Bhrikutimandap and converged into a corner meeting at Putalisadak. Addressing the rally, NSU President Ranjit Karna accused the government of acting against the rule of law by protecting those accused in serious cases of human rights violations. Karna claimed that the government was trying to obstruct investigations by politicising the cases. “Through the funeral procession, we mean to say that the government is dead,” said NSU Central Committee member Kekhnath Pokhrel. The NSU has been on the streets in protest for a week, after PM Bhattarai and Attorney General Mukti Pradhan directed the Dailekh administration to halt investigations into Thapa’s murder case. Similarly, the CPN-UMLaligned All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) staged demonstrations against the government in front of Ratna Rajya Campus between 2-3pm. The NSU and ANNFSU have plans to launch joint protests from Tuesday. According ANNFSU Vice-chairman Nawaraj Dhakal, both unions will jointly gherao District Administration Offices across the country to build pressure for action against Thapa murderers.
